Choku KIMURA
木村 直
Choku Kimura is an artist working across photography, video, installation, and archival practice. His work approaches Hansen’s disease sanatoria not simply as historical sites, but as living places shaped by everyday life.
Through architecture, landscapes, photographs, personal belongings, and archival materials, he explores traces of memory and everyday life that have become obscured within institutional and historical narratives. His practice seeks to reconsider the relationship between history, memory, and the present through visual representation.
Kimura currently works as a curator at a museum attached to a national Hansen’s disease sanatorium in Japan. Alongside his artistic practice, he conducts archival research, develops exhibitions, and works to preserve the visual culture and lived experiences of Hansen’s disease communities.
木村直は、写真、映像、インスタレーション、アーカイブを横断しながら、ハンセン病療養所を「歴史の場所」ではなく、「生活の場」として捉える制作を行っている。
建築や風景、写真、生活用品、記録資料などに残された痕跡を手がかりに、制度や歴史のなかで見えにくくなった記憶や日常を可視化し、歴史・記憶・現在の関係を問い直すことを試みている。
現在は、国立ハンセン病療養所に併設された資料館で学芸員として勤務し、資料調査、アーカイブ構築、展覧会企画などに携わる。作品制作とキュレーターとしての実践を往還しながら、ハンセン病療養所に残る視覚文化や生活の記録を残す。
